Annual General Meeting Highlights

Saturday, April 22, 2017

On Saturday, April 22, 2017 we had our Annual General Meeting. Like in previous years our agenda covered the Plant Manager’s report, financial reports and many of the committee reports.
Ben Doerksen gave a report concerning the renovations for the kitchen, bathrooms and offices. He indicated that we have been blessed with so many daily volunteers that we need to expand these facilities. Coming to Gleaners is so much more than chopping vegetables and bagging dried soup mix. While we do those things willingly most of the volunteers also love the coffee/social time it offers each day. A motion was put forward to expend these facilities by 1,400 square feet. This motion was passed unanimously! We hope to start the renovation later this summer.
We also were asked to vote on the rewording of the constitution and by-laws. We are required to do this no later than 2018 and Jack Friesen and Peter Funk have given much time to rewrite our by-laws. A motion was passed unanimously to accept the new by-laws.
Committees gave their reports and again we saw how God gave Gleaners all that it needed in order to be able to send out over 14 million soup servings last year. We are a blessed ministry! We thank each one of the volunteers and the staff that give of their time, money and love to show mercy to those in need. You are all appreciated!
Jim and Marilyn Vriend gave a presentation regarding their trip to the Esther School in Zambia. The Esther School is a Christian school for orphaned, under resourced children and half of the students must be girls. Currently they educate children in English up to grade 4 and hope each year to add another grade. These children learn to read very quickly and many of them go home and read the bible to their other siblings and parents. The Vriends brought along Gleaners dried soup mix and bags of dried apples. The children had the apples in their porridge for breakfast and the soup mix was used on the rice for lunches. God has so blessed this ministry and we thank the Gleaners for their dedication and love for the poor around the world. After the AGM we were fed with a delicious BBQ and enjoyed some social time with one another. Thank you for those who provided this meal! Submitted by Marilyn Vriend, Board Secretary

Gleaner's Expansion 2017

Gleaner's Expansion 2017

As many of you know we are planning to build two buildings this year, a shop and an addition to our kitchen, washrooms and office building. Work has begun on the shop and the plans for the other building are drawn and are at the engineer’s office now.  As soon as all the paper work is done we will apply for a permit.  The plan is to build this during late summer and into fall.  Funding for the shop has been paid by some of our membership but there is a need for some funding for the addition.  If you can help us with this it will be greatly appreciated.

Fraser Valley Gleaner's Board

Fraser Valley Gleaner's Board

In a voluntary charitable organization, everybody is considered a link in the chain of that society. This analogy also holds true in the importance of the directors and officers of the board of that organization. Although each director has a specific role and responsibility in the portfolio that they hold in the Board of Directors, some have a more direct impact on the operation of the board then others. Some of the obvious ones are the chair-person, vice chair-person and secretary. It would be unfair to choose certain people because of their service as director, but when a director has served one year as chair-person, seven years as a secretary and one year as assistant secretary, it is noteworthy to mention that person. Bob Spyksma is that person and we at the FVGS want to extend our gratitude to Bob for his service and dedication for all the years of his service.  We remember Bob and his wife Jennie, as she is facing severe health issues and our prayers are with him and his family.              Submitted by Peter Funk
